DEVELOPMENT OF AN END TO END LINE OF STANDARD DC/DC CONVERTERS
30, June 2021

ESA Open Invitation to Tender: 1-10745
Open Date: 30/06/2021 14:44 CEST
Closing Date: 20/09/2021 13:00 CEST

Secondary power conversion is needed in every satellite unit. Thus, all units and instruments have an internal DC/DC converter delivering the various voltage and power levels needed by the different electronic circuits. Those needs vary from unit to unit and hence, to cover all of them, a comprehensive portfolio of DC/DC converters is needed. This activity aims at analysing the overall secondary power needs of most units and identify a set of building blocks that would allow fulfilling those needs in a flexible way. The portfolio should be able to cover the full conversion chain from the main power bus to the final user, including all protections and filters. A flexible secondary system topology based on electronic transformers, pre or post regulated stages and point of load converters could make this possible. To minimise the size, the use of new technologies like GaN, high switching frequency and new packaging concepts (e.g. SiP, Chip on Board, non-hermetic) is highly encouraged. New technological concepts to package the DC/DC converter should be explored to reduce the volume as much as possible. The selection of EEE components should be oriented at minimising the size and maximising performance. In that sense, both rad-hard and commercial components can be considered as long as they meet the reliability and environmental requirements. Cost of the final product should be also kept in mind to achieve a competitive product. Thesystem level view of this activity should also lead to identify ASICs requirements that would enable a further volume reduction. This activity encompasses the following tasks:- Market analysis to define the envelope specifications to be covered- Identification of the building blocks enabling the implementation of a flexible secondary power system- Design, build and test an Elegant Breadboard of all building blocks- Identify advanced packaging technologies and ASICs needed to minimise the volume- Draft the qualification plan
