ADDITIVE MANUFACTURING FOR MULTIFUNCTIONAL BATTERY PACKAGING (ARTES AT 4F.154)
21, June 2022

ESA Open Invitation to Tender: 1-11183
Open Date: 02/06/2022 20:17 CEST
Closing Date: 20/09/2022 13:00 CEST

The objective of this activity is to design, develop, manufacture and test a multifunctional battery packaging thanks to a new manufacturing process based on additive manufacturing, offering lighter, safer, faster, more reproducible and cleaner solution for telecommunication satellites, including constellations. Targeted Improvements:- mass saving of about 20% – increase the number of battery packaging’s produced in a short time and to target the constellations market- reduced lead timeDescription: The small telecommunication satellite market requires fast, automated and repeatable production methods for batteries. Today, the battery packaging is manufactured by conventional methods, involving several steps in the manufacturing process flow to assemble the battery packaging items (casing, sensors, wiring, foams to mitigate thermal runaway risk and space debris mitigation). Furthermore, conventional methods are limiting the shape of the parts produced, which constrains the battery packaging weight and design. Additive manufacturing is aninnovative and promising technology that would generate added value mainly in the battery packaging design. As part of continuous improvements, it will bring the opportunity to increase the manufacturing rate, to manufacture complex shapes with higher accuracy, and to embed wiring or sensors to generate multifunctional structures. It will also increase battery reliability and battery safety by using passive propagation-resistant technologies.A scaled engineering model of a battery with additively-manufactured packaging will be designed, developed, manufactured and tested to compare its performance to a state-of-the-art battery. Footnote: On Delegation Request activities will only be initiated on the explicit request of at least one National Delegation. Procurement Policy: C(2) = A relevant participation (in terms of quality and quantity) of non-primes (incl. SMEs) is required. For additional information please go to this link.
