CCSDS (Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems) 766.1-B-2 defines a set of applicable standards for video transmission, addressing video conferencing requirements. Scientific imaging systems needs should be addressed by the CCSDS’ Data Compression Working Group in the near future. This activity aims at strongly contributing to the definition of this future standard.Projects under development such as PROSPECT, and other future robotic exploration missions, heavily rely on the acquisition of video sequences. They make use of radiation hardened cameras delivering high-resolution images (>4Mpix frames) at high frame rate (>15fps). Minimum requirements for such missions are 1Mpix images at 10fps (>100Mbps) which is incompatible with SW implementations in space processors (few Mbps in the best scenario). The target compression ratio may vary between 10 and 100 depending on the mission requirements. A trade-off will be done between image quality (lossless vs. lossy) and the available data budgets.Demonstration on European rad-hard reprogrammable FPGA technology will be performed, the baseline camera being also European. The IP core will nevertheless be portable to anyFPGA technology. ESA missions’ needs will be consolidated, and current video standards (AV1, H265 …) will be evaluated to define the minimum subset of features needed to meet the requirements while significantly reducing the complexity.The reuse of commercial IP cores (tailored to meet the requirements and reduce complexity) will be considered, provided they bring significant budget and schedule savings and that the granted sub-licensing rights are compatible with ESA IP portfolio conditions. The porting, validation andverification on representative hardware (FPGA board) will also be carried out.The activity encompasses the following tasks:- Consolidate video requirements for ESA Exploration missions,- Define develop a HW video compression solution (VHDL IP core) as a standard subset (compliance with standard decoders for interoperability),- Breadboard production, verification and validation,- Integrate in the ESA IP Core Portfolio.Procurement Policy: C(1) = Activity restricted to non-prime contractors (incl.
