The objective of the proposed activity is therefore to explore the applicability and implementation of such techniques at the edge of satellite networks in order to identify andcharacterise the resulting opportunities for Network/Service providers as well as satellite terminal manufacturers. Specifically, the activity will: Identify and review use cases benefiting from such edge network node capabilities and propose detailed deployment scenarios, focusing on the satellite remote terminal requirements. A range of vertical market requirements shall be considered. Investigate the impact to the overall service value chain and identify the business model needed to monetise the new services. Specify new satellite terminal architectures and requirements, including embedded computing/processing capabilities. Dimensioning of such capabilities shall be assessed according to the deployment scenario and Application Programming Interfaces (API) shall be proposed in order to ease third party application development on top of satellite terminal architectures. Demonstrate through a simulated Proof of Concept how an existing VSAT systems could evolve in order to fulfil some of the identified use cases. An existing satellite terminal architecture shall be the starting point for a demonstration of how the addition of virtualisation / computing capabilities can be dimensioned in order to satisfy key functions for some of the defined scenarios. To make a set of recommendations to stakeholders (VSAT manufacturers, service providers, content delivery providers, telecommunications network operators, IoT network operators, etc.) including standardisation activities to capitalise on the adoption of such techniques.
