As part of the Earth Cloud Aerosol and Radiation Explorer (EarthCARE) satellite Payload Data Ground Segment (PDGS), the Agency is developing the Mission Planning Facility (MPF). Within the PDGS, the MPF is in charge of planning the payload nominal and calibrationactivities as well as planning of X-Band downlink activities together with associated configuration control. The scope of this Contract is to define, design, implement, test and integrate the MPF into the PDGS and overall Ground Segment as well as to provide training, warranty and evolutive maintenance up to the end of the EarthCARE commissioning phase. The European Space Agency (ESA) has selected the Earth Cloud Aerosol and Radiation Explorer (EarthCARE) satellite mission for implementation as the third Earth Explorer Core Mission in cooperation with the Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA). The mission objective is to improve the understanding of the interactions of cloud, precipitation and aerosols with radiation by providing three-dimensional retrievals of cloud, precipitation and aerosol scenes with simultaneously measured top-of-atmosphere radiances and fluxes. The EarthCARE payload comprises four instruments: a cloud profiling radar (CPR) with Doppler capability operating at 94GHz, a cloud-aerosol lidar (ATLID) operating at 355nm with a high spectral resolution receiver to separate molecular from particle back-scatter plus a depolarisation channel, a multi-spectral imager (MSI) with channels in the visible to thermal infrared and a broad-band radiometer (BBR). The mission Flight Acceptance Review date is end 2017.
