Objective:The objective of this activity is to design, implement and verify the functionality of the key ground gateway digital baseband sub-systems for high throughput satellite networks with beam-hopping capabilities, including gateway diversity and progressive deployment solutionsTargeted Improvements:Enabling technologies to allow ground segment satellite gateways to work with the next generation of High Throughput Satellite systems providing beam-hopping capabilities.Description:The main advantage of the beam-hopping technique is the provision of flexibility to quickly adapt the capacity in response to traffic demand variation in a large geographical coverage area.There are beam-hopping systems being developed to demonstrate such advantages. The beam hopping technology offers an attractive proposition for commercial flexible High Throughput Satellite (HTS) systems.This activity aims at identifying the required changes to the ground gateway sub-systems, both for the forward and return link to support the beam hopping functionality in HTS networks. Hardware critical function breadboarding and testing will be carried out. A Gateway prototype will be produced allowing a European manufacturer to demonstrate the advantages of the beam-hopping technique and the attractiveness of its use.The activity should consider operational Gateway multi-beam solutions answering the following key system requirements:-Support of the beam hopping functionality on both the forward and return link.-DVB-S2X (particularly Annex E) and DVB-RCS2 air interfaces and identification of the required changes.-Required modifications to the modulator to support traffic and signalling messages on the forward link-Implementation of the network synchronization mechanism as part of the forward and return channel-Resource allocation and scheduling mechanism to cope with required quality of service and performance targets-Control mechanisms to implement the change of resource allocations both on the forward and return channels-Log-on procedures and capacity assignments-Full-duplex and Half Duplex Operation where a payload pathway is shared between the forward and return channel-Gateway diversity issues.The expected Gateway beam-hopping demonstrator should be capable of fulfilling the requirements listed above in laboratory environment.
