The objective of the activity is to establish an advanced and modular avionics architecture for Earth Observation (EO) satellites in LEO, including a roadmap for future developments. Significant technological advances in the microelectronics area result in higher performances, miniaturisation, and operational flexibility. New opportunities also appear regarding interface standardisation, or use of COTS for quicker and more affordable developments, not only for the institutional satellites, but also for NewSpace. In this context, there is a need for revising the overall avionics architecture for EO satellites, and prioritise its modernisation with the integration of functions into a lower number of (smarter) units, thus reducing platform budgets, AIT cost, and harness, speciallywith the RTU, by eventually replacing still analogue interfaces by more advanced interfaces. The study shall revise current platform avionics architectures and technology for LEO, analyse and trade-off for each unit that is part or is interfacing the spacecraft avionics, with special focus on the Data Handling part. Synergies between the one-tone type of EO satellites and microsatellites forEO Newspace shall be addressed. A new modular avionics architecture to reach high TRL within 3 to 5 years shall be defined in detail, including a progressive roadmap and number of specifications (for equipment suppliers) that could be implemented in follow-on activities.
