D-BAND PAYLOAD BUILDING BLOCKS FOR 6G SATELLITE SYSTEMS (ARTES SPL 5G 5C.472)
20, May 2022

ESA Open Invitation to Tender: 1-11255
Open Date: 16/05/2022 17:07 CEST
Closing Date: 11/07/2022 13:00 CEST

The objective of the activity is to develop and test critical payload building blocks necessary for D-band satellite links in 6G systems. Targeted Improvements: Enabling D-band satellite links. Description: Future communications beyond 5G will eventually be followed by 6G where Terahertz frequencies represents a particularly attractive and flexible solution. In particular, sub-Terahertz frequency bands between 100 and 300 GHz have been recently considered thanks to the larger bandwidth available compared to the conventional bands in an effort to maximize communication data rates through satellite links. From an RF perspective, higher frequencies allow for smaller equipment which is highly favorable for smaller satellite systems. Moreover, Terahertz spectrum also provides inherent isolation from terrestrial RF systems and thus eliminates potential radio frequency interference from terrestrial systems. To kick start the technology developments in these frequency bands, this activity will review the state of the art of D-band technology and will define a payload concept for 6G satellite systems with links in these frequencies. The activity will then identify critical building blocks that will be breadboarded and tested. Finally, the activity will produce a development roadmap for D-band payload technology.
