In this activity, an airborne demonstrator for the CRISTAL mission shall be designed, developed and commissioned. CRISTAL will be the first mission to carry a dual-frequency synthetic-aperture radar altimeter as its primary payload. This airborne demonstrator, called CRISTALair, shall operate in Ku- and Ka-band simultaneously and have across-track interferometric capabilities in both frequency bands. The CRISTALair instrument shall also include an airborne laser scanner. Further, an L1B processor shall be developed during this activity. One campaign over areas with sea ice and land ice shall be undertaken as part of this activity, to validate the CRISTALair function and performance and to collect experimental data. The main objective of CRISTALair will be to provide the essential data for the L1 and L2 algorithm development and validation of CRISTAL.
