The inclusion of Thermal Infra-Red (TIR) bands may be a solution to be considered in preparation of future high resolution optical imagers. In fact the inclusion of such bands may bring an additional improvement to the retrieval capabilities already offered by VNIR/SWIR and in several cases new mission objectives can be targeted. Optical imagers developed for ASTER, MASTER, TIMS, MODIS and Landsat missions include already few TIR channels, demonstrating great potentialities for retrievals and detections. In particular, for what concerns natural land cover, there is a need – in order to support the investigations of the Agency and of the scientific community in this field – to provide spectral libraries, analysis tools and first methods for assessing the capabilities of potential hyperspectral TIR bands for retrieving biophysical and biochemical parameters. This can be achieved by completing the following high level tasks:- definition and parameterization of some vegetation reference scenarios;- generation of spectral signatures for the selected scenarios considering different soil, vegetation condition, different viewing geometry and stage of growth;- analysis of possible co-relation between observable vegetation parameters and the response in the TIR spectral domain using the simulated databaseof signature;- development and testing of initial retrieval methods using the simulated database of signature (in synergy with VIS/NIR and other observations). The following outputs are expected:- accurate and well described database of spectral signatures thatcan be also easily re-used for further investigations in the future;- methods, tools implementing preliminary retrieval methods;-analysis results, methods testing using the database of spectral signatures- guidelines as base for future mission requirements;-clear requirements for potential in-situ campaigns.Procurement Policy: C(3) = Activity restricted to SMEs RD Entities.
