A key role of ESA in telecommunications is to promote a significant level of RD activities to ensure the readiness and competitiveness of European industry in the short and long term.ARTES Advanced Technology (ARTES AT), is the Agencys main programme for preparatory development of satellite communications, and it covers the long-term RD activities. ARTES AT activities contain significantamount of industrial research and technical risk and are therefore fully funded. ARTES AT is concerned with the early stages of development of systems and exploitation of new and promising technologies for satellite communications. In several cases the ARTES ATactivities are a continuation of an ARTES Future Preparations (ARTES FP) activity or a TRP activity. Within the TRP the components are developed and basic feasibility is demonstrated, while within ARTES AT the equipment are developed to breadboard or engineering model level. The further development to a space qualified or industrialised product is supported within the co-funded ARTES Growth andCompetitiveness (ARTES CG) element.Through ARTES AT, ESA supports the exploitation of new technologies into equipment such that in the long-term the industry will be able to offer state-of-the-art equipment and systems at competitive prices. It encompasses activities related to the development of subsystems and equipment for satellite communications. The Work Plan for 2017 specifically addresses technology and equipment activities in support of the priorities defined in the Telecommunications Long Term Plan. The Work Plan for 2017 has been coordinated with other ESA technology programmes. The activities are organised per application area and grouped as Ground Segment, System, or Space segment (Payload, Platform) related. The Work Plan for 2016 specifically addresses technology and equipment activities in support of the priorities defined in the Telecommunications Long Term Plan. The Work Plan for 2016 hasbeen coordinated with other ESA technology programmes. The activities are organised per applicationarea and grouped as Ground Segment, System, or Space segment (Payload, Platform) related. Please note: The ARTES Advanced Technology Workplan 2016 is still subject to IPC approval and cannot be considered as final until this approval has been obtained (expectedearly February 2016).
