The objective of the proposed activity is to evaluate the combination of Laser Beam Welding with Creep Forming processes in order to reduce the manufacturing steps and related costs/time of launchers structural elements and tanks up to 50%, while guaranteeing (thanks to the use of newly developed Aluminum Magnesium Scandium alloys) significantly lower weight, high strength combined with exceptionally good notch ductility and enhanced corrosion resistance. In this activity the following tasks will be performed: 1) A reviewwill be performed to establish the type of structural applications which will benefit from manufacturing using welding and creep forming. 2) Coupons will be produced which will replicate a number of the applications. The welding parameters and forming parameters will be optimized for each of the selected applications. 3) The new Al-Mg-Sc solutions will be compared with current designs (i.e. different alloy) joined by conventional techniques including cost, mass, reliability, industrial efficiency and environmental friendliness aspects.
