Functional System Simulation has become a key activity supporting the verification and validation of specification, design, implementation and operations of space systems during different stages of the development lifecycle. Functional System Simulation is done and supported by the usage of so-called System Simulation Facilities (e.g. Software Validation Facility, System Concept Simulator, etc.). These facilities are built-up, amongst others, using Simulation Models being an executable representation of a real world system. Over the recent years a lot of initiatives have targeted the facilitation of Simulation Model exchange and reuse both horizontal and vertical reuse. In this respect not only the source / executable code of a model are important but the complete life-cycle data needs to be considered to make reuse truly possible. In particular the New Modeling Methods for Simulation, Verification and Validation activity tries to bridge the gap to the domain specific Simulation Models by capturing and handling the simulation specific information. Outside the space domain similar initiatives have taken place to allow a closer collaboration between the different disciplines simulation models and as such to improve the Systems Engineering and Verification and Validation processes in a similar way.In context of the above the main objective of this activity can be stated as follows: Analysis and development of a spacecraft System Simulation Facility covering the different engineering domains by using not only Simulation Model exchange but co-simulation as enabling technology. The analysis part of the study must cover the feasibility and enabling factors of using co-simulation within the complete context of Verification and Validation taking into account the use-cases of the currently existing ECCS E-TM 10/21 facilities and corresponding processes. The development part of the study shall implement a particular use-case and demonstrate the added value of the approach. It is proposed that for the demonstrator implementation the following scenario is taken into account: System Simulation Facility: SVF/AIV with reuse possibility into the TOMS Domain specific Simulation Model co-simulation: Thermal Use case: preparation of manual and automated test procedures including thermal heater failures. The secondary objective of the activity is to find new use-cases and improve the System Engineering and Verification and Validation processes.Procurement Policy:C(2) = A relevant participation (in terms of quality and quantity) of non-primes (incl. SMEs) is required. For additional information please go to EMITS news “Industrial Policy measures for non-primes, SMEs and RD entities in ESA programmes”.
