Design of a deep-space optical communication system consisting of a Laser Communication Terminal (LCT) on the AIM spacecraft named Optel-D and an optical receiver/beacon to be installed in an Optical Ground Station (OGS). Optel-D shall be based on components developed in previous activities on laser communication terminals developed by European industry over the last 20 years. Two different ground station scenarios will be considered, namely ESA’s 1-m aperture Optical Ground Station (OGS) as baseline and a larger diametertelescope facility as an option. As AIM is part of the AIDA cooperation with NASA, together with the JHU/APL-led DART spacecraft, scenarios involving interoperability of systems shall be considered (e.g. use of optical ground facilities). The use of the instrument to obtain data of scientiific value in the context of the AIM mission will also be considered.
