ADVANCED METHODOLOGIES FOR ENTRY DESCENT AND LANDING RECONSTRUCTION – EXPRO+
5, August 2021

ESA Open Invitation to Tender: 1-10924
Open Date: 03/08/2021 15:40 CEST
Closing Date: 12/10/2021 13:00 CEST

Develop a prototype tool that implements different reconstruction methods of Entry Descent and Landing (EDL) performance. Description: Different reconstruction methods will be investigated and implemented into a software (SW) tool prototype to:- Verify the EDL performance of flown missions,- Quantify the uncertainty in the estimated parameters and models to improve the design process of future missions. The tool will generate simulated data sets with known truth data for generic EDL missions, as well as the different types of sensor telemetry. It will also support assessments on the performance of different trajectory and/or model reconstruction procedures depending on several parameters, such as:- Type of filter: when the process dynamics is highly uncertain (such as in Mars entry) the use of adaptive filtering techniques enables the adaptive estimation of the noise. The tool will support the assessment of these techniques together with other standard solutions such as different types of Kalman filter and compare their performances.- Type and number of sensors: the sensor selection determines the capability to distinguish the uncertainty on different models. The tool will allow defining different combinations of sensor data such that different types of estimators can be tested and benchmarked.- Frequency and selection of telemetry data: due to limitations in real-time data transmission, a careful selection is required for the data rate and signals to be transmitted. The tool will provide means to benchmark different types of telemetry sets and assess the impacts on reconstruction quality. A future in-flight demonstration of the tool is contemplated. The activity encompasses the following tasks:- Analysis of EDL mission performance parameters and mapping of required telemetry input,- Architectural definition of the SW tool,- Design and implementation of SW tool, including routines to handle flexibility in telemetry input and rate, – Verification in simulation environment and definition of a validation plan including future flight opportunities on EDL demonstrators.Software shall be delivered under an ESA Software Community Licence, so that any individuals or entities within ESA Member States can access to it and can provide update to the community of users.
