Objective:To design and develop a test bed to demonstrate the performance of novel ADS-B detection techniques by satellite.Targeted Improvements:To increase the performance of ADS-B satellite detection by 50% in highly congested airspaces.Description:The 1090 MHz Secondary Surveillance Radar (SSR) channel is used by many different Air Traffic Control systems, such as SSR downlink, ADS-B, TIS-B, FIS-B. However, there are many areas of the world where the installation of an Air Traffic Management (ATM) network supporting radars or ADS-B is not possible due to the high complexity and the high cost of deployment and maintenance.Fortunately, the concept of space-based reception of ADS-B signals has already been demonstrated by PROBA-V. There are number of institutional and commercial initiatives to create satellite constellations for ADS-B detection. However, the main bottleneck for space-based ADS-B is the capability of detecting aircraft in highly congested airspaces given the high level of interference seen by the satellite. An improvement of the detection capability can be achieved if a specific airplane interrogation message is sent via satellite. Such interrogation being unicast would allow to greatly reducing the interference. This is possible by using the 1030 MHz channel. In addition,the security of the ADS-B system may be improved by independently determining the aircrafts position using advanced antenna and digital signal processing techniques.The activity will design and develop an ADS-B test bed to demonstrate the performance gains of implementing the aircraft interrogation message by satellite in a number of scenarios. The test bed will also demonstrate the performance of independent positioning determination. In addition, some HW prototyping will demonstrate the feasibility of key payload functions within a reasonable complexity.
