ESA Open Invitation to Tender: 1-10743
Open Date: 24/06/2022 10:14 CEST
Closing Date: 19/08/2022 13:00 CEST
Filtering high pulsating loads like the ones demanded by pulsed SSPAs or SAR is very challenging. Since the voltage in the capacitor banks is tightly regulated, only a small fraction of the energy stored in these capacitors is used. This activity proposes to use an active filter that will provide the peak power and will store the required energy in a small capacitor bank with high voltage variation. For example, in Sentinel 1 the capacitor bank needed to filter out the pulsating load is 33mF (15.000 EUR only in capacitors). By applying an active filter, the required capacitance can be reduced by a factor of x10 (volume and price will scale in that order). It will require an additional converter to actively filter the pulsating load, whose size and cost will be a fraction of the saved capacitor bank. This activity encompasses the following tasks:- Analysis of converter topologies and controllers suitable for active filtering and providing highly pulsating loads.- Analysis of the impact of GaN devices on the size and cost of the solution-Analysis of capacitor technologies with high energy density and high power density- System level optimization of converter and capacitor banks- Prototype validation of the concepts.
