BREADBOARDING OF CRITICAL TECHNOLOGIES ENABLING VHF DATA EXCHANGE PAYLOADS (ARTES AT 5C.441)
22, October 2021

ESA Open Invitation to Tender: 1-10687
Open Date: 21/10/2021 14:15 CEST
Closing Date: 20/01/2022 13:00 CEST

The objective of this activity is to design, develop and test payload technologies compliant with the VDE satellite (VDE-SAT) protocol for VHF Data Exchange Systems (VDES). Critical breadboarding will be carried out to achieve significant reduction of DC power consumption, mass and overall volume. Targeted Improvements:50% reduced payload power consumption, mass and volume compared to current technology. Description:The World Radiocommunication Conference in 2019 allocated maritime VHF frequencies for two-way VHF data exchange via satellite, making space communication an integrated component of the VHF Data Exchange System (VDES). This activity shall develop critical technologies that are needed for the implementation of VDE-SAT on small platforms, while meeting the technical requirements for the RF, baseband processing and antenna subsystems. This activity will design, manufacture and test elegant breadboard models of the key VDE-SAT sub-systems and test the operational concepts of VDES. The elegant breadboards will be used to test and evaluate efficient power amplification and compact filter and diplexer solutions. A test-bed will be developed to test duplex communication and out-of-band frequency rejection capability. End-to-end performance testing will use the VDE-SAT protocol.
