In September 2020, the ESA Climate Office put forward a proposal to the WCRP “Call for Proposals to host a CMIP International Project Office (CMIP-IPO)”. ESA member states endorsed the submission of the proposal in the PB-EO meeting in September 2020 (ESA/PB-EO(2020)48). The WCRP secretariat confirmed in December 2020 that ESA had been selected as host for the CMIP-IPO, with its implementation starting in 2021 and being one of the major tasks for the second phase of the implementation for CCI+. ESA will be responsible forthe support of the CMIP-IPO’s functioning, personnel and operations, while WCRP remains responsible for the oversight of the IPO. Specifically, the WCRP Joint Scientific Committee (JSC) and WCRP Secretariat provide the overall guidance and oversight of CMIP and its IPO performance.
