ESA Open Invitation to Tender: 1-10628
Open Date: 01/04/2021 13:27 GMT +3
Closing Date: 01/07/2021 13:00 GMT +3

Objective: This activity aims to develop jamming detection and mitigation techniques for satellite Internet of Things (IoT) gateways as a counter-measure against security threats. In particular, threats involving partial jamming or complete service unavailabilityshall be addressed. A test-bed will be developed in order to evaluate the counter-measure mechanisms. Targeted Improvements: Enabling jamming resilient satellite IoT networks. Reduce the system outage due to jammers at least by a factor 2. Description: Uncoordinated direct communication to the satellite by massive numbers of IoT devices creates high vulnerability to intentional jamming attackscompromising or distracting the service. Harmful attacks can be devised, compromising in particular the availability of the uplink channel even with limited resources and with the knowledge of the IoT protocol. Recent studies have investigated several jamming strategies with and without the knowledge of the IoT protocols. It has been shown that the early detection of such jamming attacks can be efficiently mitigated at the physical layer or access layer to prevent the service unavailability. In this activity, techniques will be fully developed to detect such harmful jamming attacks at physical layer or MAC layer as well as strategies to minimise the impact of the jamming attack on the service availability. The activity will investigate satellite IoT protocols and extract potentialattack vectors that could perturb or even block the entire system. It will evaluate the performance of anti-jamming techniques against these attacks, such as operation at ultra-low power density, and jamming detection techniques including physical layer packetdetection and statistical patterns analyses. A software test-bed representing a large IoT satellite network will be developed in order to test and evaluated the jamming detection and mitigation techniques.
