Any space mission is operated in an environment that is recognised as a commonly shared resource among nations and operators world-wide. In that sense, a mission today cannot be designed without taking into account its interaction with the environment but also the impact on other missions. The proliferation of space debris is a growing concern, which led to the establishment of space debris reference models by different agencies already a few decades ago, with the European reference being the Meteoroid And Space debris Terrestrial Environment Reference (MASTER) model. Those developments were followed by software exploiting that knowledge to address design problems related to space debris mitigation. In 2004, ESA released the first version of its Debris Risk Assessment and Mitigation Analysis (DRAMA) tool suite. There is a clear need to align the current set of tools related to space debris mitigation in a waythat accommodates best to state-of-the-art engineering techniques in the early design of a space mission. The Debris Mitigation Facility (DMF) aims to develop a single unified set of software tools and procedures in view of the Agency’s requirements and international regulation when it comes to space debris mitigation. The objective of the activity is to develop a software framework which combines existing space debris mitigation tools to support mission designers in the requirements verification given maximum compatibility with existing standards in different project phases.
