This activity is part of the ESA Regional Initiatives programme. Its objective is to support the implementation of regional priorities in the Mediterranean region by i) developing and delivering a customized set of EO based products that fully exploit the large volumes of EO data from the Sentinel missions and other EO missions and ii) achieving measurable progresses in embedding this EO-derived information into the strategies and cooperation actions within the Mediterranean region. There are two priority application domains, namely Land degradation and Sea pollution, for which innovative EO products and services shall be developed under two independent activities. The specific objective of the Land Application project is to improve the characterisation, quantification and monitoring of soil sealing over the Mediterranean watershed (within 20 km of the coasts) by optimizing the use of the Sentinel missions and other relevant space and in-situ datasets to develop and validate a time series of multi-mission, yearly, 10m resolution soil sealing concentration maps for the period 2015-present.The specific objective of the Sea Application project is to optimize the use of the Sentinel missions and other relevant space and in-situ datasets to develop and validate, for the period 2015-present, multi-mission, high resolution, gap-free maps of relevant water quality parameters (e.g. Chl-a, turbidity, TSM, nutrients, bacteriological concentration,) and added-value innovative products (e.g. river plumes contour, specific land-based pollution indices), needed to improve the characterisation, quantification and monitoring of land-based pollution in the Mediterranean coastal waters. For both applications, stakeholders shall be involved since the early phase of the project to help consolidate the products and delivery services requirements and assess the impact of the new products for their own application.
