BIOMASS is ESAs 7th Earth Explorer mission. The mission was selected for implementation in 2012. BIOMASS is implemented as a singleplatform repeat pass interferometric and fully polarimetric P-band SAR mission. The instrument is operated in a simple stripmap mode acquiring global data in a predefined orbit scenario. The main objective of BIOMASS is to provide estimates of the distribution ofthe above ground forest biomass, of forest height and its temporal dynamics and disturbances, mainly for the tropical forest. This information shall greatly reduce the uncertainty of the land component in the global carbon cycle. BIOMASS launch is foreseen in 2022 with a commissioning phase of ~6 months. The phase E2 is composed of two phases. The tomographic phase of ~14 months and the interferometric phase for the remaining 4 years, cumulating 5 years of expected lifetime. This procurement is performed under the frame of the development of the BIOMASS Payload Data Ground Segment. Its scope is to implement the Biomass Mission Planning facility, which is in charge of:Planning the Biomass instrument activitiesPlanning the on-board and on ground X-Band downlink activities The main tasks requested are: Design, Development and testing up to the delivery of the SW, implementing the requested functionalities, together with the required supporting documentationProvision of engineering support for PDGS system level integration, training and PDGS commissioningCorrective and evolutive maintenance The contract expected duration is 43 months.
