BIOMASS is ESAs 7th Earth Explorer mission. The mission was selected for implementation in 2012. BIOMASS is implemented as a single platform repeat pass interferometric and fully polarimetric P-band SAR mission. The instrument is operated in a simple stripmap mode acquiring global data in a predefined orbit scenario. The main objective of BIOMASS is to provide estimates of the distribution of the above ground forest biomass, of forest height and its temporal dynamics and disturbances, mainly for the tropical forest. This information shall greatly reduce the uncertainty of the land component in the global carbon cycle.BIOMASS launch is foreseen in 2023 with a commissioning phase of ~6 months. The phase E2 is composed by two phases. The tomographic phase of ~14 months and the interferometric phase for the remaining 4 years, cumulating 5 years of expected lifetime. This ~3 years procurement is performed under the frame of the development of the BIOMASS mission Payload Data Ground Segment. Its scope is to:-develop an homogenous processing suite to generate the BIOMASS higher level product family:oLevel-1 SAR processor in charge of the generation of the L1 DetectedGround Multilooked produced (L1B) and Single Look complex Product (L1A)oLevel-1 stack processor generating the phase calibrated and ionosphere corrected coregistered stack (L1C)oLevel-2 Biophysical processors generating the forest related products forest disturbance, forest tree height and above ground biomass-further consolidate the definition of the retrieval algorithms-fully specifythe BIOMASS product family-provide support to integration and verification activity in the PDGS-corrective and perfective maintenance during phase C/D and E1.The product family defined fully addresses the primary mission objectives defined in the BIOMASS mission requirement document. The development is foreseen as unique procurement in order to:-strengthen the end-to-end view-factorise the development of the numerous common elements between the processors such as to speed up the development and reduce the testing effort-provide an homogeneous software suite easing the maintenance and evolution in the long runThe development of the BIOMASS processor strongly relies on the algorithm and prototype processors developed within the SAR payload development.
