To design, breadboard and test a high performance, large ,flat blackbody for on-board calibration of future thermal optical missions.Future high-resolution optical missions operating in the thermal infrared range of the spectrum ask for relatively large pupil sizes. Typically, in such missions, the pupil size is MTF driven rather than radiometry driven. Consequently, on-board calibration subsystems featuring full path calibration will necessitate highly performing large black bodies in accordance with the sizing of the pupil and the field of view. The requireddimension of their active area will challenge not only the required performance (such as high emissivity, emissivity knowledge, emissivity uniformity over the area) but also mass and volume constraints for such a subsystem. This activity will address the feasibility, in terms of design, breadboarding and testing, of a flat black body (BB) with diameter up to 400 mm, to prove its use and reliability for future thermal payloads. This activity encompasses the following tasks:- Review of possible concepts and trade-off to derive the most promising design and coating option- Detailed design and performance analysis of the flat BB- Manufacturing and testing of the breadboard flat BB
