The objective of the Feasibility Study is to carry out an in-depth analysis on the technical feasibility and economic viability of services in different area of applications (such as energy, health, environment and safety) which are enabled by biotechnology and which can benefit from utilizing space-based data. Biotechnology is today among the most powerful emerging technology, and as with every new technology, debates take place: on one side, to exploit at maximum their advantages, but on the other side, to limit unintended consequences of their use which might be harmful for human health and for the environment.Technologies adopted in biology and in the space sector are certainly different and, for certain aspects even on opposite poles, as the first looks at biological entities at nanoscale, the latter, instead, has its strong point in being a borderless asset which can look at the whole world and beyond. It is believed that space-based data could be instrumental to the sectors, which have clearly benefited by biotechnology , improving the current results and to increase confidence in the fields where biotechnology is still debated.
