The ionosphere can be influenced from below, i.e. by the lower atmosphere, for example by the transfer of energy related to upward propagating atmospheric gravity or planetary waves or by athmospheric tides. These effect are however frequently superimposed to theionospheric variability caused by the outer regions, and therefore, are more difficult to be identified. Nevertheless, several recent studies highlighted apparent association of clear signatures in the ionosphere, mainly at low latitudes, with perturbations in the troposphere and. On top, weather phenomena in the troposphere have recently been found to generate signals that propagate into thelow earth orbit altitude regime, and to be observed directly by satellites. Examples include observations of typhoons and other strong weather systems or extremely low frequency whistlers. The objectives of Swarm+ Coupling: High-Low Atmosphere Interactions include:·To investigate and explore at feasibility level the potential of Swarm data to better characterise, understand and discover (selected) coupling processes and interactions between the ionosphere/magnetosphere and the lower atmosphere and biosphere. The objective is to be seen in the broadest possible sense, but shall target phenomena that are likely to be measureable by the Swarm constellation. This applies to processes triggered in the lower regions and cause a response upwards but also to those triggered in the higher regions and cause a response below.·To develop and validate novel prototype information products based on the observational capabilities of Swarm together with additional data (satellite, airborne, marine, ground etc.) and/or models supporting the scientificcommunity to study coupling processes and interactions between the ionosphere/magnetosphere and the lower atmosphere;·To develop a scientific roadmap and formulate requirements for potentially a full development of the proposed novel scientific areas, applications or products.
