The objective of this activity is to design, develop and test a ground user modem prototype to operate in a beam-hoppingbased satellite system.Targeted Improvements: Enabling technologies to identify and implement the required changes in the existing modem capabilities to be compatible with the beam-hopping technique.Description: Beam-hopping grants the satellite system a large flexibility in accommodating irregular and time-variant traffic, providing sporadic service or capacity to the different beams on request.Future broadband high throughput satellite systems are required to provide high flexibility and capacity covering a varietyof user needs. Large coverage areas and flexibility to adapt to different traffic distributions are key requirements for satellite systems to maintain their competitiveness. Current modems are not designed to handle the beam-hopping requirements. More specifically, they lackthe synchronization algorithms and verification loops to maintain the user terminal synchronized with the beam hoppingnetwork. Thereference waveforms DVB-S2X super-frame structure in the forward link and the DVB-RCS2 in the return link are considered a good baseline to develop modems compatible with beam-hopping services requirements.The activity will identify the required changes in the existing modem capabilities to design, develop and test a ground user modem prototype using existing standards to operate in a beam-hopping based satellite system. The expected deliverables of this activity should include:.Analysis and development of specific synchronization algorithms and verification loops to maintain the user terminal synchronized with the beam-hopping network.Provision of a modem prototype integrating available chipsets in the market to reduce the development/implementation costs..Implementation of anemulation platform that demonstrates the applicability of the beam-hopping solution within a simplified satellitesystem scenario verifying the terminal synchronization aspects and the data transmission/reception performance at physical layer.
