SMOS, launched in November 2009, has exceeded already its extended life time of 5 years. There is a need to prepare the technologyfor a future follow-on mission on L-band radiometry. Based on the SMOS experience it is proposed to develop an Advanced Receiver concept which could be used in a future L-band interferometric radiometer as studied in relevant studies [RD1]. The required AdvancedReceiver will capitalize on the experience of the SMOS mission and on the use of new techniques and technologies.Along with the effort on the Advanced Receiver the Agency launches activities to look at the two other main parts of the SMOS-OPS payload:-the Optical Harness and-the on board CorrelatorThe objective is that by the advancements achieved by these three activities the technologies that constitute the SMOS-OPS payload will be in the appropriate TRL so it can be adopted in a future mission program.
