The objective of this ARTES IAP feasibility study is to develop a business case where space technologies enable services for Waste Management issues while assessing its feasibility / viability. Waste is a growing concern for society. The EU alone generates around 3 billion tonnes of waste per year, not including the collateral effects of pollution, greenhouse gas emissions and significant losses of raw materials for other products. The nature of waste is another worry, since the waste mix is changing and the volume of hazardous materials is increasing. The best approach towards handling these issues is to avoid generating waste as much as possible. However, where this is not possible, waste reuse should be maximised. Regulatory efforts are moving waste management in these directions, requiring many of the classical waste management actions to transform their operations. Waste Management industry This transformation represents a growing business opportunity for the Waste Management industry, which currently represents around 1.1 % of the EUs GDP and employs around 2 million people. The EU has ambitious targets in terms of recycling. If the goal of 70 % of waste recycling in the EU could be achieved, around 500,000 new jobs could be created across Europe. The following is a preliminary list of areas where user communities have expressed interest to ESA, and where space-based services, in combination with terrestrial technologies, can provide value:1. Logistics and recycling of commercial / industrial / domestic waste.2. Biomass / anaerobic digestion and greenhouse emissions.3. Landfill issues and illegal waste dumping. The expected business case shall focus around one specific opportunity involving space assets for waste Management, and it shall cover: the market for the specific opportunity addressed; the proposed technical solution; the intended business model; the suggested business plan and; the roadmap towards commercialisation. Assuming the expected business case proves to be feasible / viable, ESA will support its validation through a follow-on demonstration project.
