This activity aims to design and develop a Compact High-Performance Payload Data Handling Unit (PDHU) with very high functional integration for implementation on small satellites. The Payload Data Handing Unit (PDHU) manages in a single frame implementation the complete chains of data acquisition and monitoring from payloads and from On-Board Computer system (OBC) as well as integrated high end PDHU data processing functions such as data compression, data encryption, data storage, channel formatting and data downlink. The PDHU itself is designed to be controlled by the OBC of a satellite. Telecommands are received from the OBC and telemetry data is transmitted to the OBC (protocol based on PUS is proposed). Additionally, data from the OBCs can also be stored and processed in the same way as the payload data. For special applications on e.g. micro/nano-satellites, even the OBC function can be integrated into the design.
