M4 System Studies. Parallel Phase A contracts. Parallel Phase B1 contracts for the selected M4 mission following the Phase A. The X-ray Imaging Polarimetry Explorer (XIPE) would be the first high sensitivity observatory able to measure the amount and position angle of polarization for a large collection of X-ray sources. The science payload consists of a X-ray telescope assembly built with the following components: a Mirror Assembly; a focal plane assembly using Gas Pixel Detectors (GPD) for measuring the linear polarization of X-ray photons (2-8 keV), and Control Electronics. The Mirror Assembly is constituted of three identical X-ray Wolter-I Mirror Modules each comprising a number of electroformed Nickel mirror shells. The focal plane assembly includes three identical Detector Sets, each comprising: a Gas Pixel Detector, a filter wheel carrying filters and calibration sources, a baffle for straylight shielding, and Back End Electronics which powers and controls the Detection Set.
