The objective of this activity is the development of an Engineering Model (EM) of a vision-based navigation camera system (VBNS) for the GNC of the Phobos Sample Return mission (previously named Phootprint). This mission is being considered as a candidate to return a sample from the Mars moon Phobos in the 2020’s. One of the spacecraft modules is a lander, carrying the Earth Return Vehicle and Capsule (ERV/ERC), performing the operations around and on Phobos including landing and sampling . The mission is currently in phase A. The VBNS, which is to be used for the landing on Phobos, shall be of a modular design with the following three modules: optical camera (optics and detector), image processing board (avionics implementation of the image processing) and image processing algorithms. The expected VBNS EM to be produced in this activity shall be composed of: -the Image Processing Board (IPB) – manufactured up to EM level o Including IPB S/W (firmware for FPGA, and S/W for a co-processor if required) in TRL 6 (released product with frozen requirements, verified in simulated environment) o Representative in form, fit and function of the flight IPB – the Camera Optical Unit (COU) -€“ manufactured at breadboard level only, with COTS-based optics, the reference CMV4000 detector and representative interfaces with the IPB.
