The Europe’s largest space simulation chamber, the Large Space Simulator LSS, is the main facility at ESTEC test centre to perform space simulation during system level test campaigns i.e. thermal vacuum tests with or without sun-simulation on fully integrated satellites. One important part of the LSS is the thermal control surfaces (shrouds) which are used to simulate the thermal environment in space by filling/purging them with liquid or gaseous Nitrogen. The existing shrouds are stainless steel 316L explosion formed panels that were installed when the chamber was originally build early 80’s. The shrouds of the LSS are grouped in 7 sections independent section. 2 years ago a replacement program was initiated for all the shroud but in order to limit the down-time of the facility, the replacement is done section per section. This contract is to replace the shroud which is covering the junction between the vertical cylinder and the horizontal cylinder of the chamber (8-m nozzle on the schematic attached). The main objectives of this activity are to: – Design a suitable 8m nozzle based on the original schematics using the latest shroud manufacturing techniques, and thatmeets the requirements of Annex 1. – Produce, manufacture, assemble and test the shrouds at the factory – Transport the system to ESAESTEC. – Remove and dispose the existing 8m nozzle shroud system. – Assemble, install and commission the new system inside LSS. – Verify the system functional and performance requirements under thermal vacuum and sun simulation conditions.
