Several future Earth observation instruments require very high sensitivity to fulfil the mission’s objective. Uncooled heterodyne receivers operating in the 750 to 1500 GHz frequency range are needed for the next-generation Earth Observation instruments. The scientific need is driven by the need to accommodate the atmospheric measurement of Hydroxyl (1.8, 2.5, 3.5 THz). Furthermore, it fits within the Harwell discussion on SUPRA-THz sounders and the proposed LOCUS in orbit demonstrator. At (sub)mmw frequencies the overallinstrument performance is mainly determined by the mixer noise figure. At pre-phase A level very aggressive values are often assumed in the performance budget, while real-life achievable performance still needs to be demonstrated even at laboratory level. This activity aims to capitalise on the development of the Schottky technology for the highest frequencies by: designing, manufacturing andtesting a waveguide mixer demonstrator operating around 2 THz, potentially using an integrated Schottky device.
