10 YEARS OF SMOS – PASSIVE MICROWAVE VEGETATION OPACITY STUDY (PM-VO-S) – EXPRO+
18, October 2021

ESA Open Invitation to Tender: 1-10908
Open Date: 21/09/2021 15:57 CEST
Closing Date: 23/11/2021 13:00 CEST

The scientific goal of the study is to improve our understanding of the vegetation opacity data sets from SMOS and other passive microwave measurements and their information content. With more than 40 years of measurements from passive microwave measurements and an even longer time series of measurements in the optical domain, the overarching objective of this activity is to provide harmonised time series for the two groups of complementary measurements. It is envisaged that the SMOS L-band measurements and measurements from SPOT Vegetation and Sentinel-3 OLCI form the backbone of the analyses. The high complementarity of the data sets describing vegetation has been demonstrated and the radiative transfer theory for the passive microwave and optical spectral range is well described in the peer-reviewed literature. In addition, long term data continuity is guaranteed through the CIMR mission as a high priority candidate mission concept for the Sentinel fleet and the approved Sentinel-3 missions. The harmonised data sets shall be analysed in detail quantifying the information content and uncertainties as well as their spatial and temporal variability.
