ESA’s Earth Observation satellite Aeolus was launch on 22 August 2018, and hosts the first space-based Doppler Wind Lidar (DWL) world-wide. Aeolus addresses one of the major deficits in the World Meteorological Organization’s Global Observing System, namely the lack of direct wind profile measurements globally. The primary mission objective is to demonstrate the suitability of the DWL technique for delivering high quality wind profile observations from space, intended for assimilation in Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) models. The wind observations will also be used to advance atmospheric dynamics research and for evaluation of climate models. Mission spin-off products are profiles of cloud and aerosol optical properties. The aim of this study is to explore the added value of the Aeolus Level 2B wind profile product to improve the predictability of extreme weather. Suitable case studies from August 2018 until present shall be selected. Forecast impact experiments, including storm track prediction analysis, shall then be performed to investigate and quantify how the prediction of extreme weather events improve when Aeolus winds are used.
