ESA’s Doppler Wind Lidar mission, Aeolus, was launch in August 2018 as the 5th Earth Explorer in the ESA Living Planet Programme. This activity aims at optimizing the exploitation of in-orbit Aeolus data in regional Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP). A regional NWP model and a suitable model domain shall be selected and prepared for the ingestion of Aeolus L2B wind observations. An adequate global model shall be used for the provision of initialization and model boundary fields. Impact experiments for a suitable time period, with a long enough record of Aeolus L2B data of sufficient quality shall be performed and compared to control and data denial runs. The impact and its significance shall be assessed, and recommendations for the suitability of Aeolus data for regional NWP provided. The activity outcome shall serve as a guidance and support for the assimilation of Aeolus data in regional models world-wide, provided that sufficient forecast impact can be achieved. The results shall be presented at Aeolus workshops and other suitable international conferences and workshops. The team is also encouraged to publish the activity outcome in a high standard journal.
