END-TO-END PERFORMANCE SIMULATOR ACTIVITY OF THE WIVERN MISSION

ESA Open Invitation to Tender: 1-11359
Open Date: 30/05/2022 14:59 CEST
Closing Date: 15/07/2022 13:00 CEST

WIVERN is one of the four candidate mission concepts for the eleventh Earth Explorer (EE-11), approved by PBEO at its meeting of 10June 2021 (ref. ESA/PB-EO(2021)37). The WIVERN mission is dedicated to measuring in-cloud horizontal winds and high-resolution reflectivity profiles of rain, snow and ice water. To do this, it embarks a dual-polarisation Doppler conically scanning 94-GHz radar, which provides horizontally projected line of sight (HLOS) winds and cloud reflectivities at 41 off zenith with a 800 km wide swath. This is achieved by measuring the frequency shift and reflectivity of the cloud particles at 94 GHz. WIVERN will provide global products for use in weather forecasts and climate models. WIVERN will be the first space-based mission to provide in-cloud winds and hence fill a gap in the current Global Observing System. The WIVERN in-cloud products shall also be used to better quantify the Earth’shydrological cycle and energy budgets, thanks to the significant reduction in sampling errors compared to current and planned cloudradar missions. The procurement in subject concerns the End-to-End Performance Simulator (EPPS) activity Phase 1 and Phase 2 which will be performed through a phased contract. These phases are aligned with the Earth Explorer 11 Phase 0 and Phase A system studies, respectively. Subject to reception of good quality proposals, it is intended to place a single contract for this activity. The first phase of the EEPS activity will cover: – The definition of the simulator objectives, requirements, and interfaces; – A survey of existing models/modules; and – A preliminary definition of the architecture, interfaces and requirements, models and algorithms. The second phase of the EEPS activity will cover: – The consolidation of the architecture, interfaces and requirements; – The detailed design, coding, implementation, testing, verification and validation of all EEPS modules; and – The execution of the mission performance assessment campaign.
