ESA Open Invitation to Tender: 1-10765
Open Date: 11/10/2021 12:06 CEST
Closing Date: 06/12/2021 13:00 CEST

The FDIR (Fault Detection Isolation Recovery) body of knowledge (SAVOIR Handbook, COMPASS andGAFE tools, GOIRD – Generic Operation Interface Requirement Document, FDIR requirements, model based RAMS profile, FDIR techniques, Electronic Data Sheet, and other existing work) is extensive. However, there is a need to identify FDIR-related lessons learned and potential gaps from up-coming, novel low cost complex missions based on CubeSat technologies (e.g. deep space). Such platforms with limited space for redundancy due to their mass, volume and power limitations (e.g. CubeSats or other small satellites) are used in complex missions requiring autonomy and RAMS and have to operate in the presence of communication limitations, orbital manoeuvres complexity, reduced redundancy, need of autonomous navigation. The use of such CubeSats for highly complex missions (e.g. Lumio/Hera CubeSats) is driving the need of a robust FDIR coping with their limitations. FDIR systems need to be designed considering the existing shortcomings, andmaking use of the current tools/solutions in the field. The activity outcomes include necessary updates of standards, handbooks, consolidation/recommendations for the model based toolset environment and an FDIR system software model for an ESA mission embedding the mentioned characteristics. The use-case may be a CubeSat/SmallSat deep space mission, or a more challenging one to be described in detailed though mission system requirements definition, potentially produced in Concurrent Design Facility. This activity encompasses the following tasks:- Specify the selected use-case to a level of detail allowing a RAMS analysis, the definition of an FDIRconcept, requirements and architecture – Prepare a FDIR development plan including the process, tasks, tools and the output, including verification and validation (not to be done in the activity)- Develop RAMS analysis in support of the design of the FDIR (e.g. FMEA – Failure Mode Effect Analysis,HSIA -Hardware software Interaction Analysis, FDIR analysis) for the use case- Produce a FDIR concept, specify and design the FDIR for the selected use-case taking into account manners to balance the limited available resources in the presence of critical failures- Document all findings within the Savoir and MBSE HB and advise on tools and required modificationsbased on the specific case.Software shall be delivered under an ESA Software Community Licence, so that any individuals or entitieswithin ESA Member States can access to it and can provide update to the community of users.
