Objective(s) of the Activity: The objective of this activity is to consolidate a requirement specification based on market and future mission needs, then to assess the suitability of existing (non-space qualified) European tribology free pump solutions based on magnetic bearings. This comprises in the first project phase a design, risk and cost assessment and identification of re-design needs of an existing COTS product (e.g. technical needs such as launch loads and potential programmatic needs etc.). In the second project phase this comprises design activities (for the pump and its magnetic bearing), a simulation campaign and testing of the COTS product. The activity aims to move from TRL 2 to TRL 4 for the pump and its magnetic bearing. The way towards higher TRL shall be outlined in a development roadmap.
