ESA Open Invitation to Tender: 1-10758
Open Date: 04/06/2021 10:42 CEST
Closing Date: 16/07/2021 13:00 CEST

This ITT represents an ESA contribution to the joint EC-ESA Earth System Science Initiative launched in February 2020 by the European Space Agency and the European Commission (EC) Directorate-General for Research and Innovation (DG RTD) to jointly advance Earth System Science and its response to the global challenges that society is facing in the onset of this century. In particular it is part of the EC-ESA Flagship Action on Climate Adaptation and Natural Disasters. This ITT is also part of the ESA Ocean Science Cluster and contributes to some important international initiatives and programmes: The WRCP Grand Challenge on „Regional Sea Level and Coastal Impacts”. The All Atlantic Ocean Research Alliance promoted by the EU. The United Nations Decade of Ocean Science forSustainable Development (2021-2030)The overarching goal of this activity is to advance the use of EO technology and in particular, exploiting the latest advances in high resolution observations over coastal areas (with special focus on the full set of SAR altimeters, S1 and other SAR imaging systems, Sentinel 2 and Sentinel 3 and other optical high resolution optical datasets, complemented with additional information such as GOCE and in-situ observations and models) to better understand and characterise the complex processes related to sea level in coastal areas and the related coastal hazards. In particular, three goals shall be pursuit:1. Capitalise on the increasing and unprecedented European EO satellite observational synergistic capacity to develop the next generation of ocean geo-information products and consistent multi-variate datasets enabling the development of an advanced, consistent and comprehensive reconstruction complex processes and interactions (involving the ocean, the land and the atmosphere) driven regional and local sea level and the related coastal hazards. 2. Capitalise on this new observational capacity to enhance our fundamental scientific understanding of local sea level processes and the related costal hazards and our ability to assess, monitor and predict the complex underlying Earth system processes governing such events and its impacts on human activities and ecosystems. 3. Transfer the above science results and technology developments into novel actionable solutions for society, providing advanced science-based solutions to assist citizens, communities and regions in better understanding, preparing for and managing the related impacts and climate risks: e.g., Enhance our capacity to address coastal adaptation, strategies for ecosystem conservation in the coastal zone or adaptation strategies to changes in sea level, coastline, etc…
