Conventional lithium ion batteries use organic highly flammable liquid electrolytes increasing the risk of catastrophic failure dueto thermal runaways. In addition, the use of carbon anode in Li-ion batteries limit the maximum energy density. Based on scientificresults, it is believed that the use of solid state electrolytes will significantly improve the electrochemical and thermal stabilityrange of the battery cells. That will eventually contribute to enhanced safety on board the satellite and also during spacecraft Assembly Integration and Testing (AIT).The specific energy can be improved by replacing the carbon based anode with a metal based anode. Space requirements, especially for material selection and safety testing, shall be taken into account in the early stages of thedevelopment of a technology combining the advantages of both solid state electrolytes and Li metal anode. Procurement Policy: C(1)= Activity restricted to non-prime contractors (incl. SMEs).
