Due to its major contribution in addressing multi-thematic science and operational applications over the past 9 years, the CryoSat mission, has been recently extended with the objectives to tackle new challenges not only over the Cryosphere but also over inland water and coastal areas. For that, it appears fundamental to extend the current data record into the next decade and optimize the current geophysical retrievals over different kinds of surface. The core objective of the CryoSat ThEMatic PrOducts” (Cryo-TEMPO) activity is therefore to build on the heritage of previously funded RD projects in order to generate operationally CryoSat thematic products aside the ESA ground segment development cycle. These new products are expected to be high level (~Level-2+), evolve quickly, be aligned with the state-of-the-art processing technics and fulfil the need of wide communities of end-users (e.g. modellers, Climate scientists and operational/meteo services), including traceable and fully documented uncertainty parameters. The Cryo-TEMPO activity foresees two different phases aligned with the CryoSat mission extension reviews. The tasks to be performed during Phase 1 and Phase 2 will be identical, only the timelines and the considered areas will differ. During Phase 1 (until end December 2021), the contractor shall focus on the following thematic areas: Arctic sea ice and Polar Ocean; Greenland and Antarctica land ice; European coastal zones as well selected rivers and lakes. During the optional Phase 2 (January 2022 – December 2023), depending on potential CryoSat extension by ESA member states, the contractor shall continue to generate phase-1 Cryo-TEMPO and extend the product portfolio to the Antarctic sea ice and Polar ocean as well to new coastal zones, rivers and lakes.
