This activity will be part of an overall strategy for promoting development of in-house skills in image quality and tools for reuseby the Agency to support projects in Earth observation (EO).Image quality is critical to ensure the appropriate use of products from optical images and very frequently in the activities performed in support of EO projects the need of having in-house tools to perform independent analysis (e.g. Support the Mission Advisory Groups) and generate validation test data to industry has been raised. This activity will develop a generic Image Simulator for Earth Observation Optical sensors. Using airborne data, satellite images, or simulated scenarios the specific chain of models will output simulated optical sensor images as if produced by the selected sensor. The simulated images will be representative in terms of geometry and radiometry for assessing image quality performance (used during the design and development phases) as well as for use as validation data for ground processing software. The chain can have two outputs: one after instrument module, and the second after Level 1 (which could make use of L1 processing blocks developed in the frame of previous activities). The Images simulation provided by the tool will have two main purposes :- to characterise the mission and payload performance all along the design and development phases.- for creating test data for software validation in support of the development of the ground processing chainThis will be particular useful in the frame of Copernicus Next Generation (for instance Sentinel-2 and Sentinel-3).The activity encompasses the following tasks:- Requirement consolidation- Set-up of the methodology to derive proper inputs based on campaign datasets- Algorithm Theoretical Basis Documents development- Architecture development- Software design and implementation- Validation and verification and demonstration for a specific use case
