The main objectives of the Feasibility Study are to assess the technical feasibility and commercial viability of downstream space based services for the distributed energy networks (smart grids) to be deployed in the next 5-10 years, reduce the technical and commercial risks for services implementation and operation, provide recommendations for the implementation of such service(s) on the targeted market, and prepare a potential follow-on demonstration project. Opportunities for downstream space based services targeted by the study include (but not limited to): 1) Satellite supported Smart grid communication services at transmission, distribution, commercial and residential levels, potentially enabled through SatCom megaconstallations and integrated terrestrial / SatCom 5G networks; 2) Smart Grid space based applications for outage management, automatic load balancing/self-healing of the electricity grid, demand and response (DR) management, energy load and demand forecasting, advanced metering infrastructure (AMI), virtual power plants(VPP) management, distributed energy storage systems; 3) Space-based spin-off services (smart home and smart factories, smart griddistribution management and electric vehicles); 4) space – based services in support to electricity grid maintenance. The feasibility study will collect the customer requirements for the identified opportunities, assess the contribution of space based technologies, design a system and service architecture, establish the business plan, perform a risk analysis to address the main technical and non-technical risks, and propose a roadmap for services demonstration through a follow-up demo project.
