The proposed activity will address the cost and benefits offered by a maximal use of satellite in the following main streams:1)Satellite as the primary system for Communication Navigation and Surveillance (CNS) in support of virtualization:To deliver a cost-effective and spectrum efficient service, while guarantying end users with the availability, integrity, safety, security and otherperformance requirements necessary. To support, through a single system, efficient interoperability for Europes air traffic management systems, ultimately reducing costs of air navigation services across Europe for a more sustainable and competitive aviation industry.2)Satellite in support of autonomous vehicle (drone) traffic management:To define the role of satellite for cost-efficient technology introductions to support the traffic management approach for the use of (potentially hundreds of thousands of) highly connected and automated aerial vehicles (U-Space and Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems, RPAS), offering advanced data-driven services and operating potentially everywhere. Urban air mobility, Autonomous cargo drones and possibly Autonomous passenger aircraft will need connectivity for mission control, tracking, data exchange and for a Drone traffic management purpose.3)Satellite as key-enabler to the growing need of connectivity, both in the cabin and in the cockpit:To provide affordable data link capability for both safety and non-safety applications to enable cost- and time-efficient flight operations. To support new on-board applications that benefit passengers and airlines. To enable a more efficient and faster sharing of data for real-time in-flight aircraft performance, monitoring in-flight the health of critical aircraft components and avionics systems and for aircraft and avionics manufacturers to monitor their products for future improvements.
