Science has always been fundamental for ESA so much so that it has always been a mandatory programme for all Member States, from the very beginning of the Convention. The Directorate of Science has responsibility for space science missions and is focused on theachievement of two main objectives: to provide the scientific community with the best tools possible to maintain Europes competence in space; to contribute to the sustainability of European space capabilities and associated infrastructures by fostering technological innovation in industry and science communities, and maintaining launch services and spacecraft operations. The Cosmic Vision plan represents the overall scientific framework for ESAs Science Programme missions, providing the scientific community with a long-term perspective and allowing all the programmes stakeholders to prepare strategies and technologies to be able to respond to callsfor new missions. Science in its purest form does not itself change our lives. However, the overall accumulation of knowledge and the subsequent applications of science certainly do affect us greatly and change our lives, in ways we often cannot anticipate. The more commonplace the rapidly evolving technologies become, and the more improvement there is in the ways in which data can be exploited and transformed into knowledge, the better we can address environmental, scientific and societal challenges, adapt to change and improve our way of life. Last but not least, science is inspiring. Large European projects, especially, can be a means of developingEuropean pride, and they thus contribute to forming a European spirit and identity. The purpose of the study will be to perform an ex-post socio-economic impact assessment of (at least) 3 selected missions in the Science Programme and an ex-ante socio-economic impact assessment of the Science Programme (and of the missions planned for the future).
