The capture and sealing element of a sample return orbiter are one of the key elements of the overall Mars sample return architecture. The intended parallel studies will aim to keep interfaces as simple as possible in order to assure compatibility with a future orbiter design. This activity will include breadboarding of the transfer systems for the sample container inside the capture and sealing system. While breadboarding of the capture mechanism and bio-containment system have already been performed under MREP funding, no breadboarding of the transfer and handling mechanisms have so far been done. However, conceptual designs of the overall system from previous system and technology activities can serve as a starting point. The activity proposed here is intended as a Phase 1 of alarger two-phase activity (total of 2000 K per contract) comprising of: Phase 1 – the initial design definition and breadboarding, targeting as a minimum TRL 4; and Phase 2 – a design maturation, verification and engineering model development, maturing the design up to TRL 6.
