Micrometeoroid impacts have been observed in the focal planes of the XMM-Newton and Swift-XRT X-ray observatories. These impacts have resulted in considerable damages to focal-plane detectors. Particles entering an X-ray telescope aperture at grazing incidence are scattered from mirror shells and therefore focussed into a telescope’s focal plane. This poses a considerable risk also for futureX-ray missions like ATHENA. The underlying scattering process shall be investigated by performing tests and simulations. Based on the test results a scattering model shall be developed. Procurement Policy: C(3) = Activity restricted to SMEs RD Entities. For additional information please go to EMITS news „Industrial Policy measures for non-primes, SMEs and RD entities in ESA programmes”.
